About us

Prior to 1991 the Clay County Humane Society was a combination veterinary clinic and an animal shelter. In 1991 they decided to discontinue the animal shelter portion and concentrate on low cost veterinary services they had been providing which included caring for various species of wildlife.

A dedicated group of the shelter volunteers decided that the shelter operation should continue, so they began some serious fundraising and organized Safe Animal Shelter, a 501(C)(3) Non-Profit Corporation registered in the State of Florida with the purpose to preserve life and provide quality of life for lost and abandoned pets (principally cats and dogs) including food, shelter, medical attention-with spaying and neutering as the humane AND ONLY means of animal control-and companionship. Animals are cared for until such time as they can be placed in loving permanent homes. Over the years we have placed literally thousands of cats and dogs into loving homes.

We survive through private donations from private citizens and business in our community. In years to come, Safe Animal Shelter will be working extra hard to develop new opportunities for fund raising. These efforts will include our Annual Golf Tournament in the spring and the Annual Auction and Dinner held in mid October. We will also continue to host offsite adoptions throughout the community and to participate in other events that promote spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership. We continue to depend on our community partners, corporations, and private citizens for support and monetary donations, food and supplies for the animals.

We were fortunate to move into a new facility in December 2003 which is in Middleburg on the outskirts of Orange Park, FL in Clay County just South of Jacksonville, FL. Our Contact Us page provides a map to our location.

Your donations are our survival, so please help with whatever you can by clicking on one of the above Donation buttons. Our Staff, Volunteers and particularly the animals under our care will truly appreciate it.

Thank You...
